Sculpted and painted by John Long
History: During the French and Indian war the British Army came up against a formidable foe in the French Indian allies. The Indian’s fought an unconventional guerrilla war that kept the British constantly off balance. General Braddocks defeat at the hands of this type of warfare helped to reinforce the need for the British army to respond in kind. The Rangers were formed by Robert Rogers in 1755. They were made up of capable woodsmen and hunters. The Rangers were formed to meet the French and Indians on their own terms. They fought in all kinds of terrain and weather. The unorthodox tactics used by Rogers Rangers made them a very effective fighting unit. They were in a sense the first Special Forces
The Kit: The kit represents a Ranger ca.1756 preparing for patrol. He wears forest green coat, breeches and buckskin leggings. He is armed with a Brown Bess musket, knife, bayonet, and the ever present hatchet or tomahawk. His gear consists of the belt, with belly box which held 17 prewrapped paper cartridges, wooden canteen, powder horn attached to the shooting bag, and bayonet/hatchet holder. He wears the blue bonnet standard for Rangers. On his feet he wears Indian made moccasins.
