On 13th October 1801, the first consul Bonaparte decided to create a squadron of mamelukes. Although they did not form part of the consular guard they would still accompany him on his duties. The Mamelukes and their families were stationed at Melun and French officers were responsible for their administration and training.

The incorporation of the mamelukes in the consular guard occurred on the 12th October 1802, following the Chasseurs a cheval. Their status remained the same with the creation of the Imperial guard.

The mamelukes can ‘boast’ of having taken part in all the Empire’s campaigns with the first one being at Austerlitz when they charged Alexander’s horse guards along with the chasseurs. They were present at Pultsuk,Golymin and Eylau during the Polish campaign and in Madrid during the ‘Dos de Mayo’ demonstrations(2nd May1808)

After Spain the squadron entered Moscow alongside the Chasseurs a cheval. They were also involved in all the fighting of the retreat from Russia, the Saxon campaign and the French campaign. Even on Elba the ‘Napoleon squadron’ included some mamelukes.

They charged one final time with the chasseurs during the hundred days to be finally dismissed in July 1815 at Libourne and Agen. Most of these veterans and their families were massacred by the population at Marseille and the few mamelukes remaining in France lived in continuous fear. The Royals did not recognize their veteran status and thus never received anything from the half pay to which they were entitled.
